STUTTERING AN INTEGRATED APPROACH
The Integrated Approach is a term that was first used in Italy by Dr. Antonio Bitetti, in the field of stuttering therapy and then extended to other types of psychological intervention. This term refers to the application of different interpretative concepts, aimed at providing the greatest possible effectiveness in addressing different psychological disorders, such as stuttering and in all those psychological difficulties where a massive use of control over emotions occurs.
What is stuttering?
- Involuntary interruptions to the forward movement of speech
- Physical struggle and “tricks” to avoid stuttering
- Negative thoughts and feelings, discomfort about listener reactions
Stuttering is not...
- Is not a sign of emotional disturbance or low intelligence
- Is not due to shyness, nervousness, lack of self-confidence, or not knowing what to say
- Does not have a quick, simple solution or cure

ANXIETY AND STUTTERING: VALENTINA’S EVOLUTION
Valentina’s case is a demonstration of how anxiety, for different situations, can trigger a serious form of stuttering. We are talking about a girl who, as she herself explains, had never suffered from any form of stuttering before this episode. The Integrated Approach, strong in interpretative and therapeutic bases, has allowed us to shed full light on the girl’s internal and relational problems. Clearly, it is not possible to go into specifics given the conditions of privacy, but it is undoubtedly a case worthy of note and explanation in the scientific field. This case would open interesting debates on the problem of stuttering in general. But even more so on the connections between emotions and stuttering. Dr. Antonio Bitetti has been trying to make some concepts already expressed clear for over twenty-five years, but the dominant culture unfortunately is stuck on elements strictly linked to language.
DR. BITETTI, GUEST ON ODEON TV, EXPLAINS WHAT STUTTERING IS
Stuttering has always been treated with re-educational models of language, based on peripheral concepts, since the final aspect of the problem is the difficulty in speaking normally like everyone else. However, it is important to underline that the stutterer, whether child, teenager or adult, speaks very well in the privacy of his own room, does not show any type of language difficulty. The operational model called: Integrated Approach is the natural evolution of a path of research and reflection of years and years of work on stuttering and stutterers. This research aims to clarify and give the best possible answers in this area of work, with humility, without neglecting the path taken so far, but improving it, always and only in the interest of research and above all at the service of patients.

Important therapeutic innovation in the treatment of dysfluency
The therapeutic innovation introduced by Dr. Antonio Bitetti aims to prevent the chronicization of the first symptoms of verbal difficulty manifested by children aged between 2 and 5 years. Intervening comprehensively, directly on parents, with targeted measures, suitable for overcoming the element of control and emotional block of the child.
Dr. Bitetti’s research is an absolute novelty in Italy and Europe and was presented to American colleagues at the APA (American Psychological Association) conference of which he is a member, as a PhD. August 5, 2022 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, was the event in which the Integrated Approach also entered the USA.
Beware of imitations, as this research is the result of Dr. Bitetti’s constant commitment in the field of stuttering and its dynamics, even before the problem can be defined as such. It is a very delicate field because we are talking about small children and nothing can be improvised, even less with the use of techniques that do not affect the internal meaning of this problem.

Is stuttering hereditary?
Is stuttering hereditary? Many parents wonder if stuttering has genetic origins. In some cases, parents or grandparents of the patient have also suffered from it. However, Dr. Bitetti has often emphasized the relational value of stuttering, questioning a genetic origin.
